How do I disable IPv6 on Mac OS X

In order to disable IPv6 in this OS version, you will need to run a command through the Terminal application.  Please note that any changes to the network preferences may revert this setting and the command may need to be run again.

Open Terminal

  • Open Finder
  • Click on Applications
  • Click on Utilities Folder
  • Double Click on Terminal.app
  • Run the following command on the terminal window
    • networksetup -setv6off Wi-Fi

Turn Off IPv6

  • Choose Apple menu
  • Choose System Preferences

  • Click Network.
    1. If the Network Preference is locked, click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password to make further changes.
    2. Click Unlock

  • Choose Wi-Fi.
  • Click Advanced, and then click TCP/IP.
  • Click on the Configure IPv6 pop-up menu and verify it is set to Off.

Mac OS X (10.5.x and 10.6.x)

  • Choose Apple menu
  • Choose System Preferences

  • Click Network.
    • If the Network Preference is locked, click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password to make further changes.
    • Click OK

  • Choose AirPort.
  • Click Advanced, and then click TCP/IP.
  • Click on the Configure IPv6 pop-up menu (typically this is set as Automatically) and click Off.
  • Click OK and Apply (to apply the change).
